Biography

John Browne is a British guitarist from Bedfordshire and co-founder of Monuments, one of the most influential bands in progressive metal and djent. Before Monuments, he was a member of FellSilent alongside Tesseract's Acle Kahney โ€” a band that helped lay the foundations of the djent sound in the UK.

Browne has played exclusively in DADGAD tuning for over 20 years, a choice that defines his sound: chords impossible in standard tuning, dense rhythmic textures, and a dynamic range that shifts from percussive riffing to darkly melodic passages. Monuments released four studio albums: Gnosis (2012), The Amanuensis (2014), Phronesis (2018) and In Stasis (2022).

In August 2024, Browne announced an indefinite hiatus from Monuments due to ankylosing spondylitis. Alongside the band, he founded Modern Metal Academy, an education platform where he teaches his composition and rhythm techniques to guitarists worldwide.
