About the brand

Tokai Gakki Co. was founded in 1947 in Hamamatsu, Japan. The company initially made harmonicas before expanding into guitars in the 1960s. In the late 1970s, Tokai gained international attention for producing what many collectors and players consider the finest replicas of vintage Gibson and Fender instruments ever made โ€” so accurate that they prompted legal action from the American brands.

The Love Rock Les Paul and Springy Sound Stratocaster copies from 1978โ€“1981 are particularly prized: lighter than contemporary Gibson and Fender instruments, built with the same materials and construction techniques as the originals, and often described as superior in playability to the American instruments of the same era. The legal pressure from Gibson and Fender led Tokai to shift focus to the Japanese domestic market.

Today Tokai produces instruments under its own name for international markets, primarily targeting players who want vintage-accurate Japanese craftsmanship. The Love Rock and Springy Sound continue as distinct product lines, and vintage Tokai instruments from the early 1980s command significant collector premiums.
